Overview
This year-long program helps school communities achieve and maintain
broad and deep use of Open Circle throughout the school day and beyond.
The program helps schools enhance classroom and school climate, creating
a positive environment for students and staff alike, and helps students more
fully develop and more consistently use important social skills.
Through this program, you will:
• learn key concepts and practical strategies to help Open Circle and
social
and emotional learning (SEL) grow and flourish over time
• gain insights from examples of successful Open Circle
implementations at
other schools
• build relationships with a team from your own school and colleagues
from other schools committed to SEL
• develop a common vision, goals, and action plan for Open Circle in
your school
• implement customized programs and activities tailored to your
school’s needs and resources
• reflect on your accomplishments and plan for the future
Participation in this program includes:
• Initial evening event, three 7-hour training days, and a concluding
after
school meeting
• On-site, telephone and email consultations with Open Circle trainers
• Eight copies of the Open Circle Sustainability Manual
• Access to a website with special materials related to your training
• 26 Professional Development Points
• Dinner at evening event, continental breakfast and lunch at full-day
events
This program can help you develop or continue to foster a strong leadership
team of teachers, administrators and other staff from your school who
share a commitment to making social and emotional learning and Open
Circle a vital part of your school culture. Over the course of the year,
your team will develop a customized plan for social emotional learning
designed for the specific needs and resources of your school. Past years’
teams have appreciated having the opportunity to build their team, receive
ongoing consultation and support from experienced Open Circle staff,
and work together with other so that more and more people in their school
communities are actively on board with a positive vision for social and
emotional learning.
Who Should Attend
Each sustainability team typically consists of 5-8 members, including:
• At least one administrator (e.g., principal or assistant principal)
• At least two grade-level teachers who use the Open Circle
Curriculum,
preferably from a range of grades
• Other invested staff members in your school, such as guidance
counselors,
school psychologists, special subject teachers, media
specialists, after
school program staff, paraprofessionals, etc.
