Betsy is a trainer and coach for Open Circle. Prior to joining the Open Circle staff in 2006, Betsy spent 35 years as a classroom teacher and assistant principal in Taunton, MA, where she earned the distinction of Teacher-of-the-Year. In her role as assistant principal, Betsy designed and implemented discipline policies that provided clear expectations and guidelines for student behavior. While researching various approaches, Betsy became interested in SEL and its role in helping students become productive, thoughtful members of the school community. Her extensive classroom experience has given her a deep understanding of the importance of integrating SEL with academics, and the importance of giving students clear behavioral expectations and teaching social skills.  Betsy also has a lot of experience in building strong leadership teams of parents, schools and the business community. She earned her BS degree from Bridgewater State and her M.A. from Fitchburg State College.  Currently, Betsy is actively involved in community activities on Cape Cod as an officer of the New Enlightenment Institute for the Preservation and Advancement of Civil Democracy and co-founder of Cape Lyceum, a lecture series dedicated to civil discourse on topics pertinent to democratic life.
